Best New Songs Of The Week: February, 20th 2022

So I was sort of on vacation this week which is why this list is one day late, sorry. Reviews will be back in line tomorrow with either a rapid fire or maybe the new Beach House. <3

5. Magic - Vince Staples

This new Mustard produced single from Vince Staples does feature some uncharacteristic singing but it actually goes over surprisingly well. He also does some of what you'd expect him to spinning confrontational gangster tales over a sparse instrumental. It isn't redefining his sound necessarily but it does take it in a new direction while holding on to what makes him so good in the first place.

4. I Love You - Fontaines D.C

It wasn't that long ago that I hadn't really been that impressed by anything Fontaines D.C had done, but earlier this year when they dropped Jackie Down The Linethat changed. Thankfully I actually kind of like this new song too even though it can start to feel like its wandering in the middle section the distant crashing drums and direct intimate lead vocals go great together in the tracks climax.

3. Naturally - Tinashe

Tinashe really won me over with her last album so my expectations were actually kind of high for this single. While it isn't any kind of world conquering R&B epic it is a bouncy, sensual and very catchy display of physical love. Her voice continues to be the best tool in her arsenal and the combination of a thick bassline and punchy drums is still a winning formula.

2. Eat The Wine, Drink The Bread - Destroyer

This charmingly titled and incredibly groovy little number from Destroyer is the second great single from his upcoming new record and it pairs some of the glittery rhythm guitar and dark synth lines of Have We Met with a charmingly divergent chorus refrain. It's bouncy, catchy and unmistakably poetic in the way Dan Beyar has always been so good at writing.

1. King Of Sweden - Future Islands

There's just something about Future Islands singles. The absolutely infectious little synth licks that rise up into a cascading crescendo for every hook pairing perfectly with Sam Herring's unique vocal style. They just set up moments of wonderful beauty and grandiosity without every feeling like its ham fisted or shallow and this is another great example.
