Best New Songs Of The Week: January 23rd, 2022

Another week and another round of indie dominating the list. Maybe all of 2022 will be like this and we'll witness an indie renaissance that's talked about for decades. Or maybe it's just been a good few weeks, TBD.

5. Watercolor Eyes - Lana Del Rey
In case you've been living under a rock there is this HBO show called Euphoria that a lot of people have been talking about. One of the shows points of influence is the music its characters engage with and that it interpolates both diagetically and non-diagetically. The upcoming episode features a brand new Lana Del Rey song which fans got a taste of early and it's pretty good. While an artist like Lana has difficulty topping herself, she clearly has the focus to execute on the promise of her music consistently.

4. Ecdysis! - Darkside
Darkside just keep getting it done. Nic and Dave are back with a new song from the same sessions as last years Spiral album and it delivers experimental electronic sound palettes with consistently rewarding vocal refrains all the same. If you've liked anything Darkside has done so far, or really anything Nicolas Jaar has done in his entire career this is definitely worth a shot.

3. Year Of Love - Jenny Hval
While last year was when Jenny technically kicked off her new album this feels much more like a lead single going alongside some of her catchiest songs to date. The song is more focused on her gentle vocal refrains and unmistakably touching lyricism and the results are blissful. There still isn't anyone who can deliver on the beautiful brand of chamber music that Jenny consistently executes to perfection.

2. Strung With Everything - Animal Collective
Last year when Animal Collective got credit for bringing back a memorable old sound it was on the gentle swaying Prester John which revitalized the bands heyday as psychedelic indie pop sensations. On Strung With Everything they take it back even further to their days as head turning freak folk experimentalists. The track is a rousing and unpredictable tailspin that indulges with the bands experimental instincts and pairs it with their unique touch for beautiful soundplay. The results are excellent.

1. Snow Globes - Black Country, New Road
In the least surprising point of the week the band who has dominated this list more ruthlessly than any other since I brought it back is once again taking the top spot. Their new harrowing nearly 10 minute long indie meets post-punk epic continues to see the band as some of the most poignantly neurotic songwriters out there. On top of this the instrumentals palettes they weave into these songs only work to further support their consistently impressive and immaculate output. This is just another wave in what is quickly becoming a sea of incredible singles from the band.
