Best New Songs Of The Last TWO Weeks: October 31st, 2021

So I took a week off to recover from consecutive Ty Segall, Cloud Nothing, Idles and Black Midi moshpits. I think I deserved it. But now we're back and given how weak the last two classes of singles have been I decided to just combine the last two weeks and find the best five songs of the bunch to present to you here. Hopefully next week we will be back to regularly scheduled programming.

5. Tarantula - Azealia Banks
While it can be hard to predict what Azealia will do outside of her music career, generally speaking when she drop new tracks the tend to deliver and Tarantula is no different. Just in time for Halloween she delivers an eerie club jam with monotone vocals that come off more threatening than most songs trying to be genuinely scary do. The stiff club beat and organ style synths clear up a track with an alarmingly tight aesthetic.

4. Moth To A Flame - Swedish House Mafia Feat. The Weeknd
Swedish House Mafia's re-introduction into the music industry started with a surprising collaboration with 070 Shake and Ty Dolla $ign but now they're swinging for the fences with The Weeknd. Abel's name alone tends to draw in the masses and the band answers that call with a more reserved and pop approach to their typical heavily EDM inspired sound.

3. DEAD FLOWERS - HEALTH Feat. Poppy
One of the bigger surprises of the last two weeks was this new HEALTH single. After working with Nine Inch Nails earlier this year now it's Poppy's turn to feature and she delivers on this expansive industrial cut. The band trades out sonic maximalism for something more cerebral and Poppy's ominous whispered vocals make for the perfect pairing.

2. The Hardest Cut - Spoon
One of the most consistently solid indie rock bands ever continues their solidness with a ripping lead single. It's been a few years since we last heard from Spoon but that time doesn't exist within the bouncy guitar lines, memorable hooks and smoky lead vocals that make their songs so distinctive and fun. This one very much included.

1. Prester John - Animal Collective
The gang is back together. Panda Bear, Avey Tare, Deakin and Geologist are all back in action working on new Animal Collective music together and their new era is off to a hot start with Prester John a multi-phased psychedelic wander through some of the bands more straightforward instrumental diatribes. With trademark AnCo elements like memorable repetition and wandering shimmery synth lines this is one of the best singles we've heard from the band in quite some time.
