Best New Songs Of The Week: October 10th, 2021

The best new tracks released this weekend below:

5. Scripture - Eartheater
After experiencing a pretty significant breakout across her last two albums Alexandra is back with a new Eartheater sound that combines some of the beautiful vocal melodies she's so well known for with a highly digitized and jittery instrumental. It's certainly a strange and unique combination of sounds that benefits from shimmering sonic textures in the backing walls of synths.

4. Born Yesterday - Arca (Feat. Sia)
In perhaps the most unlikely pairing of the week Arca's newest single sees the experimental producer teaming up with pop's gold standard in songwriting who was responsible for the controversial Music film last year. The jittery electronic production we've come to expect from an Arca song is still but distant among the spiraling synth lines and Sia's trademark vocal harmonies. It's a combination that surprises throughout and makes for an enjoyable track.

3. Working For The Knife - Mitski
Another album and another confusing lead single from Mitski. A dreary and somber indie rock cut that basically foregoes any tangible hook and really leans in to her reputation as one of the genres most professionally sad voices. The track is decent, if underwritten and taking in precedent is likely one of many sonic directions she will take on a new record.

2. Super - Cordae
Cordae dropped one of the best EPs of the year back in April which featured him rapping introspectively and working in R&B styles. In a complete reversal of that this lead single is a straight up commercial banger that sees Cordae flexing his youth, talent, wealth and achievement. It's certainly far from the best song he's ever released but it is likely to get the attention of contemporary rap fans that may have been overlooking him.

1. The Tipping Point - Tears For Fears
For the first time since 2004 synth pop and sophisti-pop legends Tears For Fears are back with a new album, which is coming early next year. The lead single is a driving, glistening and emotional return to form with a grand array of instrumentation and a memorable chorus. The band feels like they're returning to the sound of their early 90's output with frontman Roland Orzabal has retaining his dynamic and infectious vocals.
