Best New Songs Of The Week: September 5th, 2021
Best new tracks released this weekend:
5. Good Ones - Charli XCX
With her new era Charli promised to leave experimental pop behind and pivot to more conventional pop concepts. On Good Ones she delivers on that promise with a dancefloor bop full of early Gaga worship that rounds in just over 2 minutes. It's a simple, catchy electro pop cut with hit potential, all of which are major flashbacks to some of Charli's earliest projects.
4 Sit Around The Fire - Jon Hopkins (Feat. Ram Dass & East Forrest)
This week electronic musician Jon Hopkins announced a new album entitled Music For Psychedelic Therapy and it's safe to say the lead single delivered on that promise. The 8 minute lead single features an ambient like haze over which Hopkins places a meditative guide from Western spatiality guru Ram Dass. The results are a relaxing and sonically compelling experience that experimental music fans are sure to appreciate.
3. Queen Sophie For President - The World Is A Beautiful Place & I'm No Longer Afraid To Die
The second single from the genre blending band features a change in vocalist and a pivot to a more emo inspired sound that fans of the band will be familiar with. They deliver instrumental versatility and compelling performances alongside an emotional lead vocal performance and the combo is rewarding throughout.
2. Superman That - Injury Reserve
Injury Reserve maintain the experimental outlook they established on the first single from this new era with a loud and off-kilter genre blending cut in Superman That. The song features a prominent but cut up sample of Black Country, New Road's Athens, France and manages to be very loud and unpredictable while maintaining a dreary demeanor. It's another compelling cut from the group as massive hype builds for their upcoming new record.
1. Particles - Damon Albarn
While all of Damon Albarn's singles thus far have been sonically reserved this is the most ballad like of the bunch. It presents a beautiful haze of Albarn's vocals, distant drawn out synths notes forming a murky background and gentle piano. The blend is an emotional and expansive sonic palette over which Damon plays his part in delivering a compelling song.
