Best New Songs Of The Week: September 26th, 2021

The five best new tracks released this weekend below:

5. Big Energy - Latto
Latto's most recent banger is built around a feature of Tom Tom Club's Genius Of Love, yes you heard that right. It uses the songs indelible key phrase as the base for an impressively sung hook while Latto attaches her trademark charisma to the verses all themed around the title concept. It's like a more mainstream and more danceable version of Shygirl's BDE from earlier this year.

4. Nightfall - Explosions In The Sky
The best track so far from post-rock outfit Explosions In The Sky's new PBS affiliated soundtrack album is a short dreamy cut. It kicks off like a lullaby before driving into a wonderfully slinky and atmospheric conclusion, all in under two minutes.

3. U+Me - alt-j
Despite their extended break alt-j still sound just like themselves with an exciting and instrumentally dense cut. It's a kooky and jangly indie rock jam with the rootsy percussion and a sweet memorable chorus. The bands formula executed well.

2. Royal Morning Blue - Damon Albarn
The Blur and Gorillaz front man is back again with yet another hit leading up to the release of his new record later this year. By far the most upbeat of the singles thus far he makes use of synths and drum machine and a boost in tempo to support Damon's infectious as ever vocals. It's instrumentally impressive and surprisingly fun.

1. Queens - Aeon Station
Aeon Station is the project of Kevin Whelan with performances from most of his pervious band The Wrens. After waiting on Wrens frontman Charles Bissell to approve the release of a follow-up to the bands classic 2003 album The Meadowlands Whelan decided to release some of the songs under his own project. Queens is a roaring return to form that pulls from a number of similar influences to classic Wrens material with an emotional and poignant loud quiet loud dynamic. The sonic and compositional shifts make for a compelling and occasionally thrashing set of indie rock bliss.
