Slime Language 2 - Young Stoner Life Records: Review

Slime Language 2

is the second compilation album from Young Thug's Young Stoner Life Records. It features contributions from many artists on the label, most notably Thug himself and Gunna, while spotlighting a number of young talents and bringing on many high profile guests. The 23 track 75 minute record is an extension well beyond the first Slime Language and has been one of the most talked about moments in popular rap music this year.

Review By Lav:

I've always been known to dish out praise in Young Thug's direction as one of the more unique MC's in the world of trap music. Despite that he isn't without his misses and he tends to release a lot of material, not all of which is great. Slime Language 2 takes that element of Thugger's output as a mission statement rather than a word of warning. This thing is incredibly bloated and even more inconsistent with the quality of songs varying drastically depending on the talent level of the artists involved.

One thing I will say about the record is that there are definitely highlights that I want to point people towards. The opening cut Slatty is an exciting introduction with an off the wall performance from Thugger while Diamonds Dancing is a bouncier cut with Travis Scott delivering big time on the back end. Came And Saw is a wild banger where Rowdy Rebel and Young Thug showing some surprising chemistry. That Go is an explosive single that I still really enjoy and honestly became one of my favorite songs in the entire tracklist on consecutive listens. Surprisingly one of my favorite songs here is the Lil Uzi cut Proud Of You which has a great hook and centeres around an adorably catchy bromance between Thug and Uzi.

As far as highlights go that is honestly it, and while I know that 5 of 23 isn't great odds in the records defense the vast majority of tracks here aren't outright terrible, just forgettable. The only big disappointments I had were Paid The Fine, Warrior and Superstar each of which feature at least one decently well known artists but are three of the worst songs on the record. Unfortunately some of these other songs from artists I'm not as familiar with are even worse. I Like, Came Out, GFU and Como Te Llama are some of the worst songs I've heard all year and make parts of the record incredibly difficult.

The rest of the tracks here are a mixed bag, often with incredibly inconsistent performances across its featured verses. Solid is a very average cut with a Drake feature, Pots N Pans has an actually tolerable Nav verse, Really Be Slime features a good YNW Melly Hook and finally Moon Man sounds like any average Kid Cudi song.

Slime Language 2 is a compilation in its most raw sense. It feels like absolutely nothing was left out of the tracklist here and that makes for some major inconsistencies. The best and worst tracks are honestly outnumbered by how many of these songs are just instantly forgettable. The project as a whole tends to go in one ear and out the other and while I'll return to a couple of these songs I enjoyed, I don't see myself ever listening to the album in its entirety again. 5/10

Album Cover Review By Tyler Judson:

This cover is a lot to look at. It's very in your face and full of small details to keep your eye moving throughout it. I really love the photo, it's a strong image that shows a strong visually bonded group of people. The styling, set design, and filmic quality is great. Where I think it falls is the text. The layering of the busy text with the slime graphic is too much on top of an already busy image. Other than that I think its a strong cover. 8.5/10
