Wunna - Gunna: Review
Review By Lavender:
I skipped out on reviewing Gunna up to this point for one key reason, I had nothing to say. You could describe his solo debut Drip Or Drown 2 as well as his slightly better collaborative project with Lil Baby Drip Harder as nearly comatose generic trap records with inconsistent vibes and underwritten songs. It was clear that nobody in the process was really trying as they made music so I didn't try when it came to reviewing it. But Wunna felt like a more significant statement from an artist who has proven to have some more commercial staying power than I anticipated given how samey and generic everything about his sound it. Now that I can't really ignore Gunna any longer I decided to give this record an honest shot and while it is his best record yet it still reeks from start to finish of sheer musical apathy.
The record gets off to a decent start with songs like Argentina and MOTW that capture decent vibes and at least have passable flows. Beyond this the record is full of a number of songs whose most defining quality is that they are tolerable, Gimmick. Met Gala, Nasty Girl/On Camera and Do Better. But the best songs that an album like this has to offer are always the features and this is no different. Blindfold not only has one of the records best beats but also has some actual genuinely compatibility between Gunna and Lil Baby and they play off each other better than most of the tracks on their collab album. Cooler Than A Bitch is probably the best song on the entire record not only does Gunna actually sound awake across the tracklist but Roddy Rich shows up and delivers probably the best verse on the entire album. I have been liking Roddy less and less as I hear him over the past 6 months or so but even though I wasn't looking forward to his feature here I'm convinced it may be the best part of the album. Top Floor is a blessing in the last run of the tracklist that sounds way more like a Travis Scott song with a Gunna feature and honestly it's all the better for it. It didn't blow me away or anything Travis does his thing for the most part and I could see this being a decent deep cut on one of his records. Finally the closing track Far is the second Young Thug feature and the far superior one even though I think that this entire album ends with Gunna getting bodied on his own song.
The rest of these tracks range from instantly forgettable like I'm On Some and Don't Play Around to the flat out terrible trap misses the worst of which are Skybox and Wunna. Dollaz On My Head is the other Thugger feature and it totally falls flat on its face not only is Gunna terrible but Thug is also delivering one of his weaker features. The last song I'll address is Addys which is a horrendous track that may have sounded cool if it was performed by Lil Pump on his breakout mixtape but here it is a dry and repetitive hook delivered with an absolutely lifeless and empty demeanor for what is ultimately a short run time that manages to feel excruciatingly long.
Wunna isn't very good, and it's not like I even expected the record to be good or anything but after listening to this 50 minute record a few times now I just don't understand how he continues to do numbers with songs like these. Given that this record was once again a commercial success I don't see him changing up his formula anytime soon and I can only hope that the next Gunna record isn't a Culture II type outing because I don't think I can hear this guy rip off Young Thug with no excitement to any of his performances for any longer than an hour at a time. 4/10
Album Cover Review By Tyler Judson:
Cool take on a piece of instantly noticeable imagery. While the concept has been done before I think this is done well. I think the most successful thing about this is the colors. I love the contrast these colors give to the subject and the background has a nice feeling of depth and makes the figure float. It's minimal in regards to anything else and if there was type I feel like it would overwhelm it.
