Candle Cove Singles Chart: 9/13/19

-
1. Perfume Genius - Eye In The Wall
The singles best week of 2019 so far is headlined by an artists I have been desperately waiting to hear more from since he released one of the most gorgeous and overpowering pop albums of the decade two years ago. Perfume Genuis is back with a brand new single that is sure to push the envelope of his expansive pop sound.

2. FKA Twigs - Holy Terrain (Feat. Future)
FKA Twigs has finally announced her second studio album after a five year wait and following up her chart topping lead single Cellophane wish the announcement and a Future collab is a bold move from a notoriously bold artist.

3. Slowthai and Denzel Curry - Psycho
Slowthai continues to have an undefeated 2019 as he teams up with Denzel Curry on a highly anticipated song the two debuted at Lollapalooza earlier this year. The explosive MC's are sure to make sparks fly and pits mosh when teaming up together.

4. Clipping - La Mala Ordina (Feat. The Rita & Eclamino)
Clipping drops their second single in promotion of their highly anticipated new record and as they typically do so well have invited some unique features to team up with.

5. Angel Olsen - Lark
Angel Olsen looks to continue dazzling the indie world with her stark and powerful ballads after dropping a fantastic single just last month that landed on the top of these very charts.

6. Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande & Lana Del Rey - Don't Call Me Angel
In a week with 7 artists who have scored a number one on the singles chart this year this track features two of them in Ariana and Lana. This is a fringe #1 contender in itself in any normal week but facing one of the most stacked release weekends all year, paired with its accompaniment to a movie soundtrack do bring it down just a bit.

7. Open Mike Eagle - The Edge Of New Clothes
Mr. Mike Eagle is back after dropping my EP of the year last year and as always I am highly anticipating whatever the consistently creative and unique rapper is planning to do next.

8. JPEGMAFIA - Beta Male Strategies
Peggy is releasing his new album this weekend but he did have to sneak a provocatively titled second single out just in time along with a YouTube video featuring James Blake that is circulating to drum up hype for the already highly anticipated record.

9. Kero Kero Bonito - When The Fires Come
KKB plummets on a seriously amazing week all the way down to 9 but manage to at least stick in the top 10 for their first new song all year following up last years critically acclaimed Time N Place.

10. Red Orange County - 10/10
After releasing the underrated New House single earlier this year he is turning around again and dropping 10/10 a song that I would love to be a 10/10, and one that lands at the #10 spot.

11. Weezer - The End Of The Game
Weezer, Green Day and Fall Out Boy have announced a mega tour slated for next year and all released singles to go along with the announcement, yet somehow I trust Weezer the most to put together a good tune in 2019.

12. M83 - Lena De Fiel
Two weeks and two singles for M83 as they gear up to release the sequel to their Digital Shades album next weekend.

13. Jenny Hval - Accident (Feat. Laura Jean)
Jenny recruits Laura Jean for the final single released before her first album in three years drops this weekend.

14. Charli XCX - 2099 (Feat. Troye Sivan)
After teaming up for the wonderful 1999 last year Charli and Troye are back together for what looks to be a sequel to the song released right at the buzzer before the release of her new record.

15. Kim Gordon - Air BnB
After really stepping outside of the box on her first single of 2019 who knows what Kim is liable to do, but at the very least it should be interesting.

You Are The Morning - jasmine.4.t: Review

-
Image
jasmine.4.t is a British singer-songwriter who was announced last year as a new signee of the Phoebe Bridgers-led Saddest Factory record label. You Are The Morning  follows a trio of singles that dropped last year and features Phoebe Bridgers' entire group, boygenius, on production throughout the record as well as occasional backing vocals from the trio. I was extremely excited for the release of the album after loving all of the singles and this style of indie-folk and singer-songwriter music in general. Delightfully, Jasmine didn't disappoint. When I say my expectation were high for You Are The Morning  I mean it, because the album's three singles are an astounding bunch. Lead single "Skin On Skin" is a wonderfully written tune that's able to convey some unique sensations with the physical descriptions in its lyricism. It's also the moment where I first fell in love with Jasmine's subtle but beautiful singing and when the song rushes into its surpris...

Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You - Ethel Cain: Review

-
Image
\ Ethel Cain is a singer-songwriter who has ridden a wave of popularity spawning from her 2022 album Preacher's Daughter . The record's vivid conceptual portrayal of rural living, vibrant coming-of-age narratives, and willingness to tackle difficult subject matter made it a critical darling and developed Ethel an instant cult following. Personally, I liked but didn't love the record, with my biggest complaint being the length of the album overall and the length of the individual tracks that often extend past what feels necessary for their emotional impact. That issue extended to her record Perverts  earlier this year. It proved divisive with her fanbase as she abandoned many of her folk and singer-songwriter conventions in favor of an indulgence into the world of drone. But on Willoughby Tucker , Ethel returns to her familiar style and encounters similar pros and cons.  I went into Willoughby  with high expectations based on its two singles. The longer, darker, and ...

ICONOCLASTS - Anna Von Hausswolff: Review

-
Image
Anna Von Hausswolff is a singer/songwriter who has always made waves for their distinctly intense and occasionally brooding style of music that makes prominent use of the pipe organ. Her peak of critical acclaim came on 2018's brooding yet expansive Dead Magic . Her 2020 follow-up was an entirely instrumental record, meaning ICONOCLASTS  had the chance to be a long-awaited return to form. Instead, the record presents a sound both brighter and more intimate than ever before, but finds a similar level of fascination in doing so.  The singles predicted this shift in style, but they were all so good that I never had the chance to even be suspicious about it. "Facing Atlas" is the first of the singles to pop up on the record, and it's a great way to begin the experiment. The song sounds more like something you'd hear on a Susanne Sundfor record than what I expect from Anna. The beauty of its angelic chimes matches really well with a chapel-sized performance from Anna. ...
