2018: Song Of The Summer

As September approaches and anything resembling summer fades away it's time to once again publish one of the more controversy stirring pieces of popular music journalism to write about.

The phrase "song of the summer" is inherently pop, it's about the track that was hot on every station and a must play at every pool party during the years warmest months. Its important for us to assess as we do every year the fact that a song of the summer doesn't have to be good, or unique, or critically acclaimed. Experimental music fans or indie die hards could tag plenty of songs from SOPHIE's Faceshopping, Death Grips' Black Paint or even Beach House's Drunk In LA as the songs that dominated their summer but that's not what this term means or what it represents. That's why everyone must reluctantly admit that the undisputed song of the summer of 2018 is Drake's In My Feelings.

A track that so many seem to find nauseating yet one that has dominated the charts and continues to find itself on near constant airplay and towering over the competition with its hefty streaming numbers. With a fun and hilarious music video giving it yet another boost in popularity Drake clearly stands head and shoulders above any artists in the game at far as a commercial domination of the summer airwaves. Cardi B, who produced last years song of the summer Bodak Yellow, found herself inexorably close to repeating whether it be with her smash hit I Like It, catapulting J Balvin and Bad Bunny to streaming dominance in its wake, or her much maligned but similarly inescapable collaboration with Maroon 5. But as far as Drake's competition this summer she is about it. In My Feelings has been a key part of Drake's billboard toppling campaign on the back of his newest studio album Scorpion. Along with fellow number one singles Nice For What and God's Plan no Billboard record has been safe from Drake. So as In My Feelings continues it's long reign at #1 Drake has once again proven one thing to his haters, he is one of the most capable hitmakers of all time. Drake has spent the 2010's pumping out hit after hit with the supreme efficiency of Madonna and Michael Jackson before him.  While he has been somewhat of a let down in the critical circuit in recent years he delivers time and time again without a doubt, music that the general public wants to return to over and over again. Drake's In My Feelings is a runaway for Song Of The Summer.
