Ten Songs You Should Hear This Week: 7/5/17

After a severely disappointing week last week I've combiend that list with this week, which was plentiful with releases but pitiful with quality.

10. St. Vincent - "New York"
If you're a St. Vincent fan check this out. Anne brings her voice but leaves behind her trademark cutting edge pop signature. It sounds like a Katy Perry song, but a pretty good one.

9. Foster The People - "Loyal Like Sid & Nancy"
Foster The People are coming off an EP that was nothing short of phenomenal. This song leaves me unsure what to think in many different ways, I've heard it 10 times and can't pin it down. From the Sex Pistols inspired title to the futuristic groove its a sound you have to decide for yourself if you like.

8. Liam Gallagher - "Chinatown"
It's an Oasis fans throwback song, and there's no better way to describe it.  If you're not afraid to admit you love Wonderwall and tell people not to forget about The Masterplan, you'll be right at home here.

7. Public Service Broadcasting - "You + Me"
Musically this feels like a typical PSB song and thats a very good thing. But the song focuses it's entire first half on two seperate vocal deliveries neither really come off all that special or hit home at any point in the song.

6. Broken Social Scene - "Stay Happy"
It's never been clearer the sheer amount of people that work on a Broken Social Scene song. Stay Happy spends it's entire run time as a hodgepodge of various sounds and styles that sounds surprisingly good. It takes some time to dissect it but once you've got it you should feel pretty good about it.

5. Steven Wilson - "Permanating"
It's hard to keep up with everything Steven Wilson is doing. But this change in sound makes Wilsons music more accessable and the sound benefits for it. Long time Porcupine Tree fans may not be pleased but casual listeners will be.

4. Kero Kero Bonito - "Forever Summer Holiday"
Kero can't get away making this sugary sweet blissful pop music forever can they? At least it's great for now as they put out a perfectly timed summer showdown just as glittery as last years great album.

3. The National - "Guilty Party"
The National may be the most overrated indie band of all time. They're drowned in critical praise for albums that do nothing new and a sound that is so bland they can barely stretch themselves to make a whole album every four years. This is the rare National single that works well on almost every level. It begs for a more passionate vocal performance but other than that the typically skeletal instrumental makes itself known here and makes the song work so well.

2. Manchester Orchestra - "The Alien"
The only single from last week to make the countdown it certainly leaves it's mark. They've made a great career off of the nusic they love to make and it's not stopping now. They're two singles leave no reason to not be excited about the upcoming album.

1. Tyler The Creator - "Mr. Lonely/911
The second of Tylers new songs released this week, Who Dat Boy is Tyler doing some typical Tyler shit and it doesn't do his sound justice. But in the second song he develops a flow over a jazzy instrumental with his always present witty lyricism and sillyness. Tyler has to move on from cherry bomb and this song makes it sounds like he's moving forwards rather than back.
