Thursday Album Release Hype Thread: 6/1/17

Six albums that you should be excited for this week. Singles are coming from Lorde, The War On Drugs, Radiohead and Arcade Fire so don't let these projects slip past you.

1. Alt-J - Relaxer
Alt-J have two good albums under their belt and after three different sounding singles there's no way to tell how this thing will sound. But there's one thing thats to be expected, it'll sound good. And it'll be the first album I'm playing at midnight this friday.

2. Roger Waters - Is This The Life We Really Want
Waters Pink Floyd legacy or past solo work didn't get him to this position. I'm surprised anyone is talking about it excited for a Roger Waters album in 2017 but here we are. Singles "The Last Refugee", "Deja Vu" and "Smell The Roses" are where all the excitement comes from. They're a varied and interesting trilogy of political and passionate songs. If the rest of the album can maintain this quality then we're in for a treat.

3. Beach Fossils - Somersault
There's no reason to think this project will be anything but solid, because thats what Beach Fossils does. They've made a career putting out quality efforts that don't get millions of streams or album of the year nods, but the consistency is impeccable. Don't look for a masterpiece here but it should yield some good tracks.

4. Dan Auerbach - Waiting On A Song
Numbers 4 and 5 can be interchangeable. Solo releases from popular band members that I expect to be nothing special. The Black Keys member just barely edges his way into this spot. The singles give off the impression of toned down Turn Blue B-sides repurposed into an album so don't expect sky high. But I also wouldn't count Dan out for one or two great songs somewhere on this short project.

5. Amber Coffman - City Of No Reply
Dirty Projectors just put out a fantastic self titled album early this year heavily inspired by David Longstreth's breakup with Amber Coffman so why shouldn't we be crazy excited to hear her side of the story. The singles, that's why. The absolute boredom of these singles makes it hard to be excited about a full legnth album of likely even less interesting material. Unless the singles fit in somehow to a greater more passionate narrative this may go down as a simply average final product.

6. Halsey - Hopeless Fountain Kingdom
Before you get out your pitchforks and torches hear me out, there's a reason this thing is last. Almost everything Halsey has done since Badlands has been absolutely awful but that doesn't erase the fact that Badlands exists and was an album I actually enjoyed. Just because of a few bad singles and features I'm not quite ready to write Halsey off until I give her a chance to revisit the album format.
