TEN Songs You Should Hear This Week: 6/7/17

Kicking it up a notch.
10. Joywave - Shutdown
Coming off a series of alright singles this is one of the best so far. They're not rewriting their formula but this is one of their better attempts at it. There's no reason to expect them to break out with an incredible new album but the singles at least give a reason to be excited about it.

9. Susanne Sundfør - Undercover
Ten Love Songs finally brought Sundfør the credit she deserved in 2015 but since then shes been quiet for solo work. Undercover returns with nuance rather than force and as always it left everyone excited for what direction she would take next.

8. Ice Cube - Good Cop Bad Cop, Only One Me
Ice Cube returned with two songs this week, Only One Me is a nostalgia drenched boastful banger about how Ice Cube not only still has it, but it neva left (see Snoop Dogg). Good Cop Bad Cop is a N.W.A era political rap throwdown. Cube takes no prisoners and says what he wants to say when he wants to say it. The song is entertaining as hell and takes you back in time to an Ice Cube that hadn't ever acted in "Are We There Yet".

7. Liam Gallagher - Wall Of Glass
Another Gallagher brother another suprisingly good effort. Like his brother Liam spends no time dwelling on Oasis but unlike Noel he moves into a hard hitting rattle and shake rock song. His vocals makes the song and makes me anticipate whatever he's gonna do next.

6. Alvvays - In Undertow
Alvvays is back doing what they do best. The high brow surfer/indie rock blend is back with a sound thats instantly recognizable. If your a fan of their 2014 debut self titled album, there's no way you won't like this song so don't overlook it.

5. Arcade Fire - Everything Now
It's official Arcade Fire, the band whose iconic 2004 debut album Funeral brought indie to the forefront and inspired countless masterpieces to come after it, is officially disco. They dabbled on Reflektor but it's time to do more then stick their toes in. Everything Now proves underwhelming when compared to the last title track Reflektor but it's certainly an interesting direction. We're still waiting on the song from the upcoming album that really hits but this will do for the time being.

4. Lorde - Perfect Places
Lorde has a monumental task following up her debut pop masterpiece Pure Heroine. And after three straight varied and great singles it seems like shes up to the task. More energetic than Liability but more collected then Green Light it's a middle of the road Lorde song, a label that is quickly growing better and better.

3. The War On Drugs - Holding On
How could The War On Drugs blow us away after their monumental and song of the year contending Thinking Of A Place. Short answer, they can't, but it appears that they know it. Holding On is a lovely and blissful War On Drugs song that doesn't pretend to be anything else. And it's just as good as you'd expect it to be.

2. BROCKHAMPTON - Star, Gold, Heat and Face
Kevin Abstract featured rap boy band Brockhampton have been releasing 4 singles over the last month at different times across multiple platforms so I'll talk about them together here. The band is on such a hot streak following Kevin's American Boyfriend. Every individual MC is on top of their game and the infectious fun they're having is irresistible. Gold is a personal favorite of mine from Kevin Abstracts irresistibly gay chorus to the variety of flows and sounds throughout the verses. Their upcoming mixtape this friday should be one of the best and most refreshing rap will hear this year.

1. Radiohead - I Promise
It's impossible to compliment OK Computer in a way that nobody has before. Radiohead's masterpiece is universally praised as one of the greatest albums of all time, period. Hearing a song made in the albums era being released for the first time 20 years later is like a dream come true. Similar to Untitled Unmastered last year Radiohead was in a time of such peak creativity that even the songs that fell short of the albums final cut have to be incredible and I Promise supports this theory. The gorgeous ballad feels like it belongs right in the second half of the tracklist. I Promise is a shoe in top 100 track this year.
