Friday Morning Album Mellow But Still Kinda Hype Thread: 6/16/17

Had a rough Thursday night? There's new music for you.

7. The Drums - Abysmal Thoughts
The Drums have been counting down members since their inception and breakthrough in the late 2000's and it hasn't resulted in higher quality music. Abysmal Thoughts may be the last chance for Jonathan Pierce to save his band from obscurity, maybe expect some risks on the album.

6. Big Boi - Boomiverse
With almost every single released for Boomiverse Big Boi feels even further from his OutKast origins. Setting aside "Kill Jill" the singles have been rough around the edges and over all lackluster attempts to capture the modern rap audience using old school flow and production. It's hard to expect much out of this project but with a diverse list of features and the potential for throwback sound around every corner every rap fan should be able to find something they like here.

5. Young Thug - Beautiful Thugger Girls
If we've learned anything from Barter 6 and JEFFERY it's that the prolific trap artists best projects typically come every few tries. But who knows what to expect from Thugger, after conflicting tweets and multiple pushed back release dates BTG could sound like anything.

4. Ride - Weather Diaries
This one comes with a prayer, but hey Slowdive came back in 2017 why can't Ride. The singles have done their job to make hype and prove Ride isn't completely out of ideas, a fine times and well constructed album could put shoegaze back in our heads for years to come.

3. Royal Blood - How Did We Get So Dark?
Royal Blood's 2014 debut was a shining example of mosern rock music, not afraid to pull from its contemporaries to create a rocking sound all their own. The singles point in a similar direction for their sophomore effort towards a sound thats been all to unavailable in 2017 so far.

2. Fleet Foxes - Crack Up
After a stunning debut album and an overrated but still essential second effort Fleet Foxes established themselves as the premier indie folk band. The singles, Robin Pecknold's instagram posts and great early reviews point this in the direction of being right on par with their other two albums, and thats high praise.

1. Lorde - Melodrama
The long awaited follow up to Lorde's iconic debut album Pure Heroine is finally here and it looks like it will live up to the hype. After a stunning Coachella show and a handful of well received singles Lorde seems ready to take on even more critical praise and commercial success with Melodrama. All that's left to do is listen.
