Best New Tracks Of The Week: 11/10/24

5. TURN YOUR HEART AROUND - SBTRKT
The strange phenomenon of new SBTRKT singles being lightyears better than anything on the project's new album from last year continues. This is a short but sweet track that really puts its head down and grinds out a pummeling pseudo-industrial little dance track with tight loops and fuzzed-out vocals for a mostly pretty irresistible result.

4. PHANTOM BRICKWORKS VII - Bibio
Another helping of the familiar solemn piano and isolating ambient compositions of Bibio's PHANTOM BRICKWORKS series feels perfect right now. It also feels in line with the trio of singles released so far from the upcoming ambient-focused project. This may be my favorite of the bunch offering up another bulky runtime that manages to impressively weave together a beautiful, gentle series of piano passages effortlessly.

3. PLAY DEAD! PLAY DEAD! - Vylet Pony
Color me surprised as someone who has always had mixed feelings on Vylet Pony's music, this shit is an absolute fucking jam. It starts out playing a bit of Underscores pastiche sounding a LOT "geez louise" but this song is a roller coaster from the first second to the last. Churning driving guitar riffs power along though weird electronic and even dubstep-flavored interludes with vibrant lyrics about the benefits of being ferociously yourself.

2. Syrup Sandwiches - Cordae (feat. Joey Badass)
I'm allowing myself to become pretty excited for a new Cordae album. Though I haven't cared for a ton of what he's released since his debut his recent singles have been a major improvement and this is no different. With a blurry chorus backed by a vintage instrumental, this is a much more low-key outing and he recruits Joey Badass for a short but solid guest performance alongside him. It's another hit as far as I'm concerned.

1. This World's A Giant - Zach Bryan
I know exactly what I'm doing in placing this song on this list in a week where Zach faced such turbulent personal drama. The jury likely won't be out on the situation for a long time but one thing I won't do is pretend that he isn't lightyears ahead of nearly every other artist in popular music. Single after single from his prolific release schedule is so consistently excellent it's mind-boggling how he's able to sustain it. Once again he drops a song that manages to pull off both introspection and observation and doing it with gentle swaying poise and infectious refrains throughout. He's basically a cheat code.
